A week in Burgundy, hosted by the people who own the boat

On Saturday at 2 pm a private transfer collects you in central Paris (pickups from Geneva or Lyon work too) and brings you to Magnolia, moored on the Saône at Chalon-sur-Saône. A welcome drink is poured, the owners introduce you to the barge that is also their life’s work, and dinner is served on board.

Magnolia was built in 1956 and converted into a luxury hotel barge in 2014. Up to six guests share two double cabins and a suite that makes up as a twin or a double, each with a large ensuite bathroom, and the whole vessel is always yours: Magnolia sells by private charter only. The owners have spent years in hotel barging, and it shows in the details, from the spa on one sundeck to the outdoor demonstration kitchen on the other.

The week itself reads like a Burgundy wish list: a truffle hunt with lunch at the farm, a barrel maker’s workshop near Beaune, a tasting at Château de Meursault, the Hospices de Beaune, the private Château de Germolles, and one evening at a local family’s table in Rully, a dinner most visitors to Burgundy never get near.

Life on board

Your home for the week: the Magnolia

Magnolia is a spacious barge, built in 1956 and converted into a luxury hotel barge in 2014, run by its owners for no more than six guests. Below deck, a large lounge and dining room comes equipped with TV, DVD, a library, an iPod dock, and WiFi. Above, there are two sundecks: one with deck furniture and an outdoor demonstration kitchen where the cooking becomes part of the entertainment, the other with a spa, reached directly from the cabin corridor. Bicycles are aboard for the towpath, and a minivan waits ashore for the week’s guided excursions to châteaux, vineyards, and the towns of Burgundy.

The Magnolia deck plan. Three cabins (two doubles plus a twin or double suite, each with a large ensuite bathroom), the lounge and dining room, and two sundecks, one with a spa. The most common question from first-time barge guests: there is room to spread out, and the crew knows when to give you space.

What makes this week different

our-beautiful-boat-magnolia-1
Hosted by the owners, not a rotating crew
Magali and Nicolas Rancelot have spent years in hotel barging, and Magnolia is their boat. That changes the week in small ways that add up: the home-hosted dinner with a local family in Rully that only comes through personal connections, a tour guide who drives you to the places worth seeing, and hosts with a real stake in how your week goes.

Truffles, barrels, and Meursault
The excursions go past the standard wine-tour circuit. You hunt truffles at La Maison des Mille Truffes and eat a truffle-themed lunch at the farm. You watch a cooper near Beaune shape barrels the old way. You taste at Château de Meursault, tour the 15th-century Hospices de Beaune, and finish at the private, 14th-century Château de Germolles.
magnolia-wheel-house-sun-deck
Two sundecks, one with a spa
Most barges this size give you one open deck. Magnolia has two: a furnished sundeck with an outdoor demonstration kitchen, where you can watch the day's meal come together with a glass in hand, and a second deck with a spa, reached straight from the cabin corridor. On a warm Burgundy afternoon, the spa with the vineyards sliding past is the seat everyone wants.

Good to know

Straight talk before you book. A hotel barge is a particular kind of trip, and it does not suit everyone. Here is what to expect, so nobody arrives picturing a week it was never going to be.
The cabins are intimate, not a grand hotel.
Magnolia has two double cabins and a twin-or-double suite, each with a large ensuite bathroom, which is generous by barge standards. They are still boat cabins: cozy and efficient rather than sprawling. The luxury here is waking somewhere new most mornings with the Burgundy countryside outside your window, every meal already handled, and a spa deck upstairs. A hotel room gives you one view all week. This gives you a new one each day.
Summer can be hot.
July and August are the warmest months. The canal setting helps: shade along the towpath, water on both sides, cooler mornings and evenings, and the spa deck earns its keep on warm afternoons. If you feel the heat, May, June, September, and October are gentler months to travel.
The pace is slow, and that is the point.
A barge moves at walking speed, and some days you cover only a few miles. If you want a packed schedule and a new city every night, this is the wrong trip. If you want to actually stop, this is exactly it.
Getting on and off takes some mobility.
Barges have narrow gangplanks and steep, compact staircases, so they do not suit guests who need step-free access. If you have any concerns, tell us before you book and we will give you a straight answer about whether this barge works for you.
Children are welcome on a charter.
Barging suits kids from about age eight up, and since Magnolia is always a private charter, your group sets the tone. Tell us their ages and we will be honest about whether the week will land for your family.

After 24 hours, payments are non-refundable if you cancel, including for illness or inability to travel. You may substitute passengers by contacting us. Travel insurance is strongly recommended and not included in the price.

Magnolia sells by whole-barge charter only, for up to six guests. There are no shared cabin departures on this barge.
Cruises run Saturday to Friday. Most barges in the fleet board on Sunday; plan flights around the Saturday start.

Cancellation policy, in plain English

If we cancel
You can cancel within 24 hours after your initial booking payment and receive a full refund. Contact us within that window. After 24 hours, payments are non-refundable if you cancel, including for illness or inability to travel. You may substitute passengers by contacting us.
If the owner cancels
If the barge owner cancels your cruise for any reason, we will provide a full refund. This differs from a route change where the trip still operates.
If the route changes
Lock repairs, drought, flooding or unsafe conditions may require an alternative route. A route change does not by itself give you a right to cancel for a refund. If the owner cancels the cruise itself, the full-refund policy applies.
Payments
A 25% deposit is due when booking, with the balance due 90 days before departure. Bookings made within 90 days require full payment. Your checkout shows the exact amounts and due dates.
Travel insurance
We strongly recommend travel protection for non-refundable trip costs and medical evacuation. Cover and exclusions depend on the policy you buy. Read the policy and check with the insurer; accepting our booking terms does not buy or decline insurance.

Frequently asked questions

The questions guests actually ask before their first barge trip. If yours is not here, call Kim at 888-229-2315.

The Magnolia and This Route

What are the cabins and bathrooms actually like?

Three cabins: two doubles, plus a suite that makes up as a twin or a double, each with a large ensuite bathroom. Magnolia was converted in 2014 with comfort and contemporary style in mind, and the bathrooms are roomy by barge standards. They are still boat cabins: cozy and efficient rather than large. Picture a well-appointed small hotel room that happens to move through Burgundy. You never share a bathroom with other guests, and housekeeping refreshes the cabins daily.

The owners live aboard. Is it strange having them around all week?

This is the question almost every first-time guest is too polite to ask. The honest answer: it feels like being looked after, not watched. Your hosts have welcomed guests for years, they read when you want company and when you want privacy, and by day two most guests stop thinking about it. Many end the week saying the hosts were the best part.

Do we really have the whole barge to ourselves?

Yes, always. Magnolia sells by private charter only, for up to six guests. There are no shared cabin departures on this barge: no strangers, no shared table, no schedule but your own. That makes it a natural fit for a family, two or three couples, or a small group of friends.

Why does this barge start on a Saturday?

Magnolia runs Saturday to Friday, while most barges in the fleet run Sunday to Saturday. In practice it works in your favor: you can fly into Paris on a Friday overnight or Saturday morning, be aboard by late afternoon, and still be back in Paris on Friday with a weekend to spare. Just double-check the day before booking flights.

What is there to do all day? Will we be bored?

The rhythm on most days: a gentle morning cruise or an excursion, lunch aboard, then an afternoon visit or free time to walk or cycle the towpath, read on deck, or sit in the spa. This particular week packs in a truffle hunt, a cooper, Meursault, Beaune, a private chateau, and a family dinner. If you need a packed city schedule to feel like you are on holiday, a barge can feel slow. If your idea of a good week is a glass of Rully and the countryside going by at walking pace, boredom is not the problem. Leaving is.

What if there is not enough water in the canal to cruise?

It is uncommon, but canal levels can occasionally limit how far the barge travels in a given week, usually after a dry spell. When it happens, the crew rebuilds the week around the same villages, vineyards, and meals by road. We would rather you hear this from us now than be surprised by it. Travel insurance is a sensible backstop for the things none of us control.

What makes this route different from the other barges?

Three things. The hosts: Magnolia is owner-operated, and the home-hosted dinner with a family in Rully is the kind of evening only personal connections produce. The excursions: truffle hunting, a working cooper, and a Chateau de Meursault tasting go past the standard circuit. And the barge itself: two sundecks, one with a spa, on a course through the Cote Chalonnaise and the southern Cote de Beaune.

Getting There

How do we get to the barge?

You do not have to arrange anything. A private transfer collects your group in central Paris at 2 pm on Saturday and delivers you to the barge; the same service returns you to Paris on Friday. Pickups from Geneva or Lyon can also be arranged if that suits your travels better. The travel day is easier than most trips you have taken: one suitcase, one meeting point, and the crew takes it from there.

Can we drive and park?

Yes, it is possible to drive and park at the boarding ports. Get in touch and we will give you the specifics for your departure point.

On Board Life

What is the food and wine like?

A full continental breakfast is served aboard each morning, and lunches and dinners are a mix of meals on board and meals ashore, all included, with an open bar throughout. The week also builds in a truffle-themed farm lunch, a Chateau de Meursault tasting, a restaurant evening in Chagny, and dinner at a family’s table in Rully. One more treat: the sundeck has an outdoor demonstration kitchen, so some of the cooking happens right in front of you.

Will we have WiFi and phone signal?

Magnolia has WiFi aboard, along with a TV, DVD player, library, and iPod dock in the lounge. Phone signal on the canal is usually good when moored in the mornings and evenings, patchier while cruising through open country. Most guests come to see the disconnection as part of the point. Enough for email, photos, and a call with the grandkids.

Are there bikes aboard?

Yes, bicycles are aboard for guests, and the flat towpath is easy, pleasant riding alongside the barge between locks.

What happens at the locks?

Locks are part of the fun. On the second day the barge climbs a lock with a 30-foot rise as it leaves the Saone for the Canal du Centre, and smaller locks follow through the week. They are easy places to step off and walk, and in many stretches you can stroll from one lock to the next and rejoin the barge on the other side.

Can you handle dietary needs and allergies?

Yes. Tell us at the time of booking. With four guests at most and the chef herself taking the request, dietary requirements and preferences are handled personally rather than passed down a kitchen line.

Do I need to dress up for dinner?

No. Dinner is a gourmet event, but the dress code is relaxed: think smart casual, the way you would dress for a nice dinner at a friend\’s home. No jackets required, no gowns, no fuss. Comfortable shoes matter more than anything formal.

Comfort and Concerns

Is Magnolia suitable for guests with limited mobility?

Barging is one of the most accessible ways to see rural Europe, with one honest caveat: barges have narrow gangplanks and steep, compact staircases, so they do not suit guests who need step-free access. If you have any mobility considerations, reach out before booking and we will give you an honest answer about whether this barge works for you.

Is this suitable for children?

Barging suits kids from about age eight and up, and because Magnolia is always a private charter, younger children can be accommodated by arrangement. Tell us their ages and we will help you decide honestly.

What about the summer heat?

July and August in France can be hot. The cruising day is built around it: mornings on the shaded deck, excursions timed away from the worst heat, and cold drinks always at hand. Ask about cabin cooling on this barge before you book a peak-summer week.

Are we too old for this?

No, and you would be in good company. Most barge guests are in their 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond. The pace is unhurried by design: the barge moves at about four miles per hour, and there is no packing and unpacking between hotels. You settle in once and France comes to you. Guests who want more activity can walk or cycle the towpath beside the boat; guests who want none can watch it all from a deck chair.

Are we likely to get seasick?

Very unlikely. Canals are flat, placid water, and the barge moves at a slow, steady pace. If you are prone to motion sickness on boats, the canal is about as gentle as it gets. There are no waves and no swell, and there is no rocking at night because the barge moors every evening. If motion sickness has kept you off cruise ships, this is the boat that was built for you.

Is it safe?

Yes. You are on flat, calm water in settled countryside, never far from a village. Your hosts handle every lock and mooring. On deck, the usual boat rules apply: mind the rails, wear sensible shoes, and take the towpath at your own pace. Children need supervision on deck, the same as at any waterfront.

Money, Tipping, and Terms

Kim confirms availability directly with the barge owner. A 25% deposit is due when booking, with the balance due 90 days before departure. Bookings made within 90 days require full payment. If the owner cancels the cruise itself, the full-refund policy applies. Read the full Booking Terms and Conditions.

What if you or the barge owner cancel the cruise?

If the barge owner cancels your cruise for any reason, we will provide a full refund. This differs from a route change where the trip still operates. Read the full Booking Terms and Conditions.

Can I move my dates instead of cancelling?

You may substitute passengers by contacting us. The booking terms do not promise a refund or automatic credit for changing dates. Contact us about a requested change before making other travel arrangements. Read the full Booking Terms and Conditions.

Is there any way to book risk free?

You can cancel within 24 hours after your initial booking payment and receive a full refund. Contact us within that window. After 24 hours, payments are non-refundable if you cancel.
