A day on board

No two routes are the same, but the rhythm of a barge day is. Here it is, from the first croissant to the last look at the stars.

Morning

Wake to fresh croissants

Breakfast is light and unhurried: fresh fruit, yogurt, preserves, and juice pressed that morning. By the time you wake, a crew member has already cycled into the village for warm croissants and baguettes. Take your coffee up to the deck and watch the canal wake up with you.

Mid morning

A slow cruise, or a walk ahead

Most mornings the barge cruises a few gentle miles while you settle in with a cappuccino. At each lock you can step off and walk or bike the towpath. The barge never gets far ahead of you, so there is no fear of being left behind. The crew is glad to suggest longer cycling routes if you want to earn your lunch.

Midday

Lunch on deck

Lunch is light on purpose: fresh local ingredients, French cheeses, and two or three wines from the region outside your window. Most days your chef serves it on board, so the scenery keeps drifting past while you eat.

Afternoon

Out into the region

Afternoons belong to the countryside. Depending on your route, that might be a chateau tour, a tasting in a family cellar, or a wander through a medieval village. Some stops are a short walk from the mooring. For everything farther out, your barge has its own minibus, and entry fees are already covered.

Late afternoon

The hours that are yours

Back on board, the crew greets you with whatever the moment calls for. Read on the sun deck, join a game of boules on the towpath, or ask for a cocktail. A glass of the local sparkling wine before dinner is something of a house tradition.

Evening

Dinner from a very small galley

The dress code stays casual, but the cooking does not. Your chef builds each course around what local growers had that morning, pairs every plate with wines from nearby cellars, and closes with a tasting of French cheeses. One night each week, most barges book you a table at a fine restaurant ashore.

Night

A perfect ending

After dessert, coffee and a nightcap move to the salon. Most guests take one last trip up top to look at the stars before bed. The mooring is still, the village is asleep, and tomorrow is already taken care of.

The food

Every barge carries its own chef, and every chef cooks from scratch in a galley smaller than most home kitchens. They shop the morning markets and buy from local growers, so the menu follows the season rather than a recipe card. Most meals end with a tasting of two or three French cheeses, because you are in France and that is the law of the table.

Each course is paired with wines from the region you cruised through that day.

The wine

Lunch and dinner are paired with the wines of whichever region you are floating through, and afternoon tastings take you into the cellars where they are made. A week on board adds up to a friendly masterclass in French wine.

Burgundy

A private crew runs your week: captain, chef, guide, and hostess. Gourmet meals, regional wines, an open bar, and daily excursions are all included in one price. Your only job is to show up.

Champagne

The only place on earth allowed to call its sparkling wine Champagne. Chalky soils, cool weather, and cellar visits at the source.

Bordeaux

Red blends built on Merlot and Cabernet, from storied names like Saint-Emilion and the Medoc. Deep, elegant wines that age for decades.

Canal du Midi

The easygoing south: Grenache and Syrah, fruit-forward and made for warm evenings on deck, along a UNESCO listed canal.

Breakfast, lunch, and dinner, cooked fresh each day by your private chef.

Wines paired with lunch and dinner, drawn from the region you are cruising.

3 Open bar

An open bar on board, stocked before you arrive and open whenever you are.

4 Daily excursions

Guided outings by minibus, with entry fees to chateaux and tastings covered.

5 Bicycles

Bikes on board for flat, easy towpath rides between locks.

6 Transfers

Included on most barges, often to and from Paris or the nearest TGV station. Each barge page lists its own arrangement.
