As seen on Rick Steves' Europe (PBS) and in The New York Times • Owner-captain Jonathan at the helm

Jonathan came to the canal the long way around. He restored his first sailboat himself, learned crew management from the hull up, then spent years running luxury sailboat charters in the Caribbean. When barge cruising pulled him in, he bought the Mirage. Now he is the one steering her between Carcassonne and Le Somail, and the one welcoming you aboard with a champagne reception on deck.
The Mirage takes up to six guests in three cabins, always as a private charter. There is a spa on the deck, wifi on board, and a bar stocked for the week. And unusually for a barge, several dinners happen ashore and are included in the price: at the restaurant of the Château de Pennautier, and inside the citadel of Carcassonne itself.
The route runs the Minervois stretch of the Canal du Midi: the walled city, the giant chasm of Cabrespine, the perched village of Minerve, and the farmer’s market at Paraza. One evening, weather permitting, a jazz band sets up on deck and plays through dinner.
The Mirage carries up to six guests in three cabins, and she is run by the man who owns her. Jonathan restored his first sailboat from the keel up, ran luxury sailboat charters in the Caribbean, and brought that standard of guest care to the Canal du Midi when he bought the Mirage. On board you will find a saloon, a dining area where most breakfasts and lunches are served, wifi throughout, and a spa set into the deck for the end of a warm Languedoc afternoon. Because the Mirage sells only as a whole-barge charter, the six of you, or four, or two, will have her entirely to yourselves.

The questions guests actually ask before their first barge trip. If yours is not here, call Kim at 888-229-2315.
The Mirage has three guest cabins, and the gallery above shows them as they are: comfortable, well finished, and cozy rather than large. They are boat cabins. Picture a well-appointed small hotel room that happens to move through the Minervois. There is room to unpack and settle in, and the crew keep everything spotless. If a big hotel bathroom matters a lot to you, that is the one thing worth picturing honestly before you book. You never share a bathroom with other guests, and housekeeping refreshes the cabins daily.
Yes, on every departure. The Mirage does not offer shared cabin weeks. Whether you book as two, four, or six, the entire barge belongs to your group alone. If you would rather join other travelers and split the cost by the cabin, look at the Athos, which offers both ways of booking.
It is the Mirage’s quiet advantage. Jonathan restored his first sailboat himself, ran luxury sailboat charters in the Caribbean, and bought the Mirage because barge cruising was the life he wanted. He steers the barge, sets the tone on board, and answers for every detail personally. The crew have their own quarters and their own rhythm, they read when you want to chat and when you want space, and by day two most guests stop thinking about it.
The rhythm on most days: a gentle cruise, a guided excursion to a place like Carcassonne, the Cabrespine chasm, or Minerve, lunch aboard, then a free stretch to walk the towpath, sit in the deck spa, or do nothing at all. If you need a packed schedule to feel like you are on holiday, a barge can feel slow. If your idea of a good week is a glass of Minervois and the vineyards going by at walking pace, boredom is not the problem. Leaving is.
It is uncommon, but canal levels can occasionally limit how far the barge travels in a given week, usually after a dry spell. When that happens, the crew rebuild the week around the same villages, tastings, and meals by road. We would rather you hear this from us now than be surprised by it. Travel insurance is a sensible backstop for the things none of us control.
Three things you will not find on the other Canal du Midi barges: the owner himself at the wheel, restaurant dinners ashore included in the price, and a jazz band on deck one evening. The route runs Carcassonne to Le Somail through the Minervois, the same stretch as the four-guest Johanna; the Mirage is the way to do it with a group of five or six. For bigger groups still, the Athos carries ten.
Transfers to and from the barge from the local train station are included; at the end of the week you are transferred to your departure point between 9:00 and 10:00 a.m. Saturday. If you are coming from Toulouse or Montpellier, transfers can be arranged at an additional charge. Tell us your travel plans and we will help you sort out the routing. The travel day is easier than most trips you have taken: one suitcase, one meeting point, and the crew takes it from there.
Yes, it is possible to drive and park at the boarding ports. Get in touch and we will give you the specifics for your departure point.
All meals and breakfasts are served on board, with the bar and refreshments included, and the week is punctuated by tastings in the region itself: the sommelier-led cellar tasting at Pennautier, a wine tasting after Minerve, and the Domaine du Somail. Two dinners happen at restaurants ashore and are included in the price. Wines and alcohol you buy ashore beyond that are your own.
The Mirage has wifi on board, included. Phone signal along the Canal du Midi is generally reasonable near towns and patchier in open country. Telephone and internet costs ashore are your own. Enough for email, photos, and a call with the grandkids.
A spa pool set into the deck, big enough to sit in with a glass of something cold while the vineyards slide past. On warm Languedoc afternoons it is the most contested seat on the barge, and after a day of walking Carcassonne’s ramparts it earns its keep.
On board there is a saloon, a dining area where most breakfasts and lunches are served, wifi throughout, and the spa set into the deck. Excursions and visits to historical sites, villages, museums, and tasting workshops are all included, along with the transfers to and from the local train station.
Locks are part of the fun. This stretch of the Midi has plenty of them, from the Herminis lock on your first evening to the Aiguille and Argens locks later in the week. They are easy places to step off and walk the towpath, and you can rejoin the barge on the other side.
Not at all. Your crew speaks English, every excursion is guided in English, and the chef translates the cheese board. If you want to try your bonjour at a market stall, the vendors are patient and it usually earns you a smile.
Yes. Tell us at the time of booking. With four guests at most and the chef herself taking the request, dietary requirements and preferences are handled personally rather than passed down a kitchen line.
No. Dinner is a gourmet event, but the dress code is relaxed: think smart casual, the way you would dress for a nice dinner at a friend\’s home. No jackets required, no gowns, no fuss. Comfortable shoes matter more than anything formal.
Barging is one of the most accessible ways to see rural Europe, with one honest caveat: barges have narrow gangplanks and steep, compact staircases, so they do not suit guests who need step-free access. If you have any mobility considerations, reach out before booking and we will give you an honest answer about whether this barge works for you.
Because the Mirage is always a private charter, the week is yours to shape. Barging tends to suit kids from about age eight up: old enough to enjoy the locks, the castles, and the caves. Tell us their ages and we will be honest about whether the week will land for your family.
July and August in the south of France can be hot. The cruising day is built around it: mornings on the shaded deck, excursions timed away from the worst heat, and cold drinks always at hand. The spa on the deck helps too. Ask Kim about cabin cooling on this barge before you book a peak-summer week.
No, and you would be in good company. Most barge guests are in their 50s, 60s, 70s and beyond. The pace is unhurried by design: the barge moves at about four miles per hour, and there is no packing and unpacking between hotels. You settle in once and France comes to you. Guests who want more activity can walk or cycle the towpath beside the boat; guests who want none can watch it all from a deck chair.
Very unlikely. Canals are flat, placid water, and the barge moves at a slow, steady pace. If you are prone to motion sickness on boats, the canal is about as gentle as it gets. There are no waves and no swell, and there is no rocking at night because the barge moors every evening. If motion sickness has kept you off cruise ships, this is the boat that was built for you.
Yes. You are on flat, calm water in settled countryside, never far from a village. Your hosts handle every lock and mooring. On deck, the usual boat rules apply: mind the rails, wear sensible shoes, and take the towpath at your own pace. Children need supervision on deck, the same as at any waterfront.
Yes. Laundry is not included, but it can be done by a professional service ashore during the cruise. Ask the crew early in the week and they will arrange it.
